3 Reasons To Choose Dental Implants Over Dentures

Posted on

When it comes to replacing missing teeth or teeth that have to be pulled, you have to make some serious decisions about the kind of dental work you want done. If you do not know what option to choose, then here are 3 reasons to choose dental implants over dentures as a replacement option.

Easy Maintenance

First, dental implants are much easier to care for than dentures. When you get a dental implant, it will be surgically implanted into your gums. The implant is like a little screw, and it acts as the anchor for the splint and crown that will be attached to it after the healing process. Also, your gums will heal and adhere to the implant, so it will become part of your mouth.

When you get an implant, you do not have to do much during the healing process aside from swish with mouth cleaner so that the surgical area stays clean. After a few months, you will get your splint and crown, and you do not have to use any special equipment to clean your teeth.

Instead, you can just brush and floss as you normally would, and this will keep the crown and implant clean.

If you get dentures, then you have to take them out and put them in your mouth every day. They will never be permanent, and they may need repair or replacement sometimes. You will also have to clean the dentures in cleaning solution at night, which is not necessary for implants.

Comfort Level

Next, there is a considerable difference in the comfort level between implants and dentures. The only time that your implant should hurt is for a few days following surgery, and this is because your mouth has been through some trauma to get the implant in there.

Once a few days pass, you will not notice nearly as much sensitivity, and you will eventually forget that the implant is there. This is especially true once the crown is in place because there will not be a gap between your teeth anymore.

Dentures, on the other hand, can be very uncomfortable because they can rub against your gums when you eat, talk, or move your mouth. The best way to make dentures more comfortable is by getting the right kind of grip for the dentures, but even then you can experience soreness.

Durability Level

Lastly, implants are more durable and will last a lot longer without problems. The actual implant should last the rest of your life, but you may have to get the crown replaced every decade or two. This just depends on the amount of wear you put on the crown on a daily basis.

Dentures, however, are more fragile and may need replacement or repair on a more frequent basis, so this can cost more in the end.

If you did not know what option to choose before, hopefully now you will have a better understanding of why implants are better than dentures.
